Benefits for the person you care for
Attendance Allowance is an allowance disabled people aged 65 or over who find it difficult to look after themselves. The person you care for might get it if they have dressing and washing difficulties. Unless they are terminally ill, this need must have existed for six months. It is not means tested and people do not have to have a Carer to claim this benefit.

Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is a benefit for adults aged under 65, or children with disabilities who need help looking after themselves or getting around because of physical disability, or because they have a mental health problem. The person claiming does not need to have someone looking after them or to have paid any National Insurance contributions.
DLA is divided into two parts and is not means tested - Care Component for help with personal care needs and Mobility Component for help with getting around.

Incapacity Benefit – if the person being cared for cannot work because they are ill or disabled and have paid National Insurance contributions they may be able to claim. Young people aged 16-20, in some circumstances or 20-25, may qualify even if they have never worked and paid National Insurance. This is called Incapacity Benefit in Youth.

Working Tax Credit – people aged 16 or over, are disabled and working16 hours a week or more, may be able to get Working Tax Credit which tops up their earnings. For people working less than 16 hours a week Income Support may be available.
